Family situation

  • Son of Alfred and Mary Platt.
  • His father was a labourer on the coal pit bank (name of pit not known)
  • He was the 2nd youngest of eight children and lived at Balterley Heath
  • He was 15 years old when war broke out.

Service

  • He enlisted in Newcastle-under-Lyme into the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment)
  • He was killed at Pozieres (Battle of Pozières) 26th March 1918 aged 19. In March and April 1918 the Germans drove the Allies back over the Somme battlefields; there were many casualties. Advance to victory didn’t begin until August.

  • No marked grave.
  • Alfred is remembered amongst 14,000 others from the March –August 1918 period on the Pozieres Memorial PanelShow on map 52- 54. 6k NE of Albert.
