Biography – Private Harry Moss

• Born in Wrinehill in 1894, baptised at Wrinehill Primitive Methodist Chapel.
• Mother- Emily Cooper lived in Old Road Wrinehill before marrying his father George, a coal miner from Madeley.
• He had a brother and two sisters.
• He lived in one of 4 terraced house on Den Lane just beyond the Crown (demolished in 1960’s).
• His mother died when he was 3 months old and is buried in Betley churchyard.
• His father married again and Harry had 3 more siblings.
• The family moved to the 3^rd house of Brassington Terrace with land stretching down to Cracow Moss.
• Harry had a bright and happy disposition; with a cheery word for everyone.
• He was Secretary and a teacher at Wrinehill Methodist Sunday School.

Employment

• At 14 he went to work for the L & NW Railway at Crewe station. He was a Parcel porter for 8 years.

Service

• He enlisted in Crewe March 1917 with his cousin, Arthur Brassington and joined the South Lancs Regiment. He was transferred soon afterwards to the 15^th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.
• He went to the front June 1917 and was involved in a lot of action in the Battle of Cambrai – 20^th 1917 around Gouzeaucourt Wood;
• On 3^rd Dec he was killed by a shell fragment and buried next day.

Buried

• There is no marked grave. But he is commemorated at the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval (Panel 3)
